The final stage of this section of the piece came by way of a thousand cuts...
The billboards were secured at the base and then, utility knives in hand, we cut the maps to eliminate that which was removed for the development of the original freeway project. The cuts served to reveal layers of present, conceptual and historical space.
In all, 1,590 homes were demolished for the construction of the Park East Freeway. Along with this, many small businesses were also uprooted in this project, several of which no longer survive.
The aim of the cuts is to address this, not simply as a location of loss, but as an area to be transformed, changed and re-filled.
